That time of year can be the best in Sydney, bright clear warm (not hot cays) cool nights, the further north you go the warmer it will be, but it is our winter so it can also be cold but over 7 weeks you should get a fair amount of good weather.
Cheapest day out in Sydney I can think of is the cliff top walk between Bondi beach and Coogee, great walk and scenery and its free
I love the Manly to city ferry in Sydney – you get a nice view of the opera house and the harbour, and of course the harbour bridge. If you’ve got family here they’ll probably take you anyway.
For free things to do there’s a lot of walks in Sydney like Spit to Manly, or just about the city and the rocks areas. I’d recommend the Lonely Planet Guide – even have a look at the lonely planet site as it has good tips about what to see.
