What is the best deal for a train ticket to travel around tokyo?

sparkyswordfighter asked:

Going to Japan. Have looked at the Japan Rail Pass which is like every rail way in Japan. Don’t know if it’s worth getting if half the trip is going to be spent in tokyo? What’s a good/cheap train ticket to get for travelling around tokyo for a week?

If you’re looking for convenience, buy a Suica or a Pasmo card. They should be available at any station.

You can by a Suica & NEX package for 3500 Yen (5000 Yen for the green car version) that consist of 1) a one way trip from Narita Airport to Tokyo (or Yokohama) by Narita Express and 2) a Suica card worth 2000 Yen (500 Yen refundable deposit plus 1500 Yen worth of train fares), a great deal, considering that the regular one way fare of the Narita Express alone is around 3000 Yen or more! (I guess you can get the 500 yen deposit on the card back at Narita station when you leave, but I do not know)

PS. With two types of subway and numerous different overground trains it can be difficult to find out how much a trip is going to cost so this is definitely the way to go. You can use it on the buses too!

I am not sure what Mrsjvb means by JR card, but you can use the Suica card on everything – I have one so there is no mistake.

the JR pass is only good on the JR lines.. while 90% of the Tokyo lines are KHK. they make passes.. all day, weekly, even monthly. for unlimited usage those are the best way to go.
